Grandpa Baboo's Neighborhood
Events in the Life of Grandpa Baboo
On this page I have recorded events in which I was involved this past week, as well as thoughts and opinions about these events. It is not a blog since I have not included a method for you to respond and add your opinions/feelings. I guess it would more appropriately be called an daily online diary which is then published each week. You may comment in the guestbook. However, since I fund the website, I reserve the right to delete offensive comments.

Saturday was a quiet day at home except that Saturday evening we joined our
friends Mary Ann and Joe at one of our favorite places, Aurelio's Pizza in
Tinley Park. The pizza was as good as ever and one of the few things
(along with the company) that we really missed. This winter was an
evaluation period and our first experience at "snowbirding" a word that I
don't much care for (hate labels) but now I am one. We also were able
to examine a lifestyle which included more family time, something to which
we were not accustomed. During a 20 plus year service career
Mary and I and the kids spent most of our lives away from what we would call
home and family. Home was whatever Mary created out of the apartment
we rented or the base quarters to which we were assigned. So the kids spent
minimum time with Grandma and Grandpa on leaves (vacations) which at longest
were not longer than 30 days. This trip Dirk was much closer to
Grandma B and was quite disappointed when it was time for us to
leave. However, no more so than B who is still not sure of how
to deal with the separation. The day before we left Dirk asked if he
could come with and also invited his Mom. That did not make leaving
any easier. Well we shall see what develops. Sunday Orland Park sponsored The Times of the Civil War. This was a reenactment that took place at the Humphrey Woods on West Ave near the Village Sports Complex. There was a two day encampment (CLICK for pictures) and regularly scheduled skirmishes on Sat. and Sun. Participants were dressed in period civilian clothing and of course period military uniforms and equipment. Even Mr. Lincoln showed up. One of the interesting things of the weekend was the changing of uniforms and sides by the participants to balance the ranks on each side. Monday I made a trip to our twice weekly Legion coffee break at the Orland Park Veterans Center. After a bit of catching up a few of us went to Foxs' for lunch before I returned home to do the St Julie Bulletin. A look at my ftp setup showed an incorrect user name and password for file transfer. I experimented with a couple of combinations before I emailed my fellow web team member Don for help. By esp from Don (I had not yet received his email) the proper combination jumped into my brain and I was able to connect with the server. Must be I have sometimer's disease i.e sometimes you forget stuff. Tuesday I finished the project of converting the bulletin from the Publisher format to pdf and adding the new link on the Bulletin page. Equipped with the proper user id and password, it was a simple matter to upload it to the server. Earlier Mary had returned from a shopping trip with some new golf shirts for me. With the opening of the Southern Command in Florida some clothes have been left behind to lighten the baggage load on future trips. The problem that created is one of us is usually looking for something before realizing that it is in Florida. This activated the one in one out rule. With a small home and limited closet space the rule is if you buy something new, something goes to make room. We spent some time sorting through my closet and came up with two large plastic bags full of shirts and trousers which although no longer needed or wanted because of size, color or style were still viable options that someone could wear. My big Wednesday job (really not that big) is the updating of the St Terrence website. The weekly bulletin was waiting in my mail box and in short order the job was done. Since there were no new events in the bulletin, the home page did not need updating so the job was easy. One thing that has been added to the site is the addition of the Men's Club golf league information. This will save the club a few bucks on a specialized site to which they had previously subscribed. There is some introductory information on the site but I need to get together with the coordinator to discuss what will be presented and how it will look. Wednesday was also haircut day. I went to Sport Clips (near Walmart) and coincidentally my stylist's name is also Kathleen. From there I headed for St Julie. I had asked in an email if they would hold a couple of tickets for Taste of Poland for us and my memory was jogged by an email asking when I planned on picking them up. From there I did a bit of looking at Hobby Lobby before stopping to drop the Tuesday's plastic bags of clothes and a few other things at Goodwill. We like Goodwill because the donated items are sold at reasonable prices for people with perhaps limited resources. In addition, jobs are provided for someone who might otherwise not have a job. Thursday's big project was a trip to the foot doctor for as my friend Don calls it "some pampering". Nails are trimmed, a callous scraped and padding applied. Even with my current leg problem I left with a slight spring in my step. The doctor also provided a scrip which is supposed to get me a small discount on new walking shoes at the relatively new New Balance Store on LaGrange Road. The mid afternoon appointment left me time to go to the Sportsplex for a bit of walking before stopping at Subway for our gourmet dinner. Don had sent out a special include me update indicating a problem with parish email and the parish web site. Initially on Wednesday it appeared to be a minor problem which would soon be fixed. Funny I had an email from Rita Wednesday about the dinner tickets on Wednesday. He mentioned on his web site this week that when he got to Bible Study on Thursday that the problem was a bit more serious and we may be down until Monday. It appeared to be something to do with SBC. I could not help buy wonder if someone was digging somewhere without calling Julie to outline cable placements.
Friday we arose quickly to
head for blood work appointments in Mokena. In the past, Mary and I
had typically gone at different times based on when we saw our cardiologist.
However, when I called from Florida to move previously scheduled
appointments we ended up on the same morning. This worked out so well
in this age of obscene gas prices we scheduled the nest appointments six
months hence also for the same day. We were so happy with the results
we decided to take a page out of friend Don's book and reward ourselves with
breakfast. However, before doing that we took a ride over to Markham
to get the emission test done on Mary's explorer. On return we stopped
at Lumes, one of Mary's favorite places (she loves the crepes). Mary
behaved herself with plain crepes, no powdered sugar and sugar free syrup.
I, on the other hand was not so good opting for the potato pancake benedict
with poached eggs on top of potato panckaes (in place of the English muffin
with bacon and Hollandaise sauce all accompanied with home fries.
Shame on me. From there we ventured to the Walmart Superstore in
Lockport for some food items which we could then donate to the annual mail
carriers food drive on Saturday morning, stopping to buy a poppy on the way.
Of course we did not get out of Walmart without additional items. We
both found car chargers for our cell phones, while I also found a belt case
for mine. Currently I had carried mine in my pocket. It is not a
pretty sight watching me dig for it while driving. If I take it out of
the pocket and place it in the console, it usually ends up there while I am
inside somewhere and miss a call. Oh my heavens I have become a cell
phone junkie. At least it might keep me from getting comments about
not answering calls. Next week my round of medical appointments
continues with the cardiologist on Monday the Urologist on Wednesday
and the Dermatologist on Thursday. The following week it is the Orthopedist
as we evaluate a hip for maybe a replacement.
Ah, the Golden years. I usually read my friend Don's update each
week before updating. This week I discovered that our age gap is
temporarily widened as Don celebrated another Birthday twice so a belated:
